DIETs were established in accordance with the National Policy on Education 1986. Now DIETs have been established at revenue district level all over India. In Kerala, 14 DIETs function, one in each district. The mission of DIET is to give academic leadership in the field of school education in the district.

Pre-service Teacher Education and Inservice Teacher Education function under the same roof in the DIET.
